Austmine 2026 Industry Insights

Design Anthology Joins the Panel at Austmine 2026

Last week the Design Anthology team attended Austmine 2026, one of Australia’s leading conferences for mining innovation, technology and collaboration. The event brings together mining companies, technology providers, researchers and industry leaders to explore the future of the sector and the technologies shaping it.
Our Director, Josh, was invited to participate in a panel discussion as part of the event, contributing to conversations around innovation, technology development and the role of collaboration in advancing the industry. The conference also provided an opportunity to connect with organisations across the mining ecosystem and hear first-hand about the challenges and opportunities shaping the sector.
Across the conversations, panels and showcases throughout the week, several consistent themes emerged.

The Power of Partnerships Between Primes and SMEs

One of the strongest messages from the event was the value created when large organisations collaborate with small and medium enterprises.
When structured well, these partnerships unlock opportunities that neither side could achieve independently. Large organisations bring scale, operational reach and long-term continuity, while SMEs often contribute agility, specialist expertise and the ability to test and iterate ideas quickly.

This combination can create powerful environments for innovation. Models such as “skunkworks” style collaborations allow ideas to move rapidly from concept through to testing and deployment, helping accelerate the development of new technologies and solutions for the mining sector.

Turning Mining Knowledge into New Opportunities

Australia has developed extraordinary capability through decades of mining experience. A compelling theme throughout Austmine was the opportunity to translate this accumulated knowledge beyond traditional extraction.
Operational insights developed in mining environments can evolve into scalable technologies and products with applications in other industries and global markets. From digital platforms to advanced physical technologies, the sector holds significant potential to transform operational expertise into exportable innovation.
Examples such as SAPHI and Orica’s FragTrack platform demonstrate how deep industry knowledge can evolve into technologies that deliver value far beyond their original application.

The Role of AI in Mining Innovation

Artificial intelligence was another major topic throughout the conference, with discussions balancing optimism with practical caution.
While AI presents enormous opportunities, the fundamentals remain critical. Any new system must still answer key questions: does it deliver real operational value, can it be trusted and understood by users, and does it responsibly manage data?
Without these foundations, AI risks becoming hype rather than capability. As with any powerful tool, its impact ultimately depends on the expertise of the people using it.

Contributing to the Conversation

We would like to thank Orica for the opportunity to participate in the panel and contribute to these important discussions. Events like Austmine provide valuable forums for sharing perspectives, exploring emerging technologies and strengthening connections across the industry.
During the Innovation Showcase, the team also presented the latest evolution of the FragTrack platform – the Gen 4 F80 – an exciting milestone in the continued development of the technology.
Austmine once again highlighted the strength of Australia’s mining innovation ecosystem and the growing role collaboration will play in shaping its future.
