The Brief
Founded by our client & proclaimed plant-mum Louise Burr, the PerkyPod is a plant pot – but not how you’ve ever seen it before. With its innovative internal drainage, filtration, & water catchment system, PerkyPod is a game changer for plant owners (or those who want plants but have a knack for killing them)!
When Louise first visited the Design Anthology studio, she not only had an idea, but a Concept Business Plan & home-made test-rig – she had done her research & knew she had found a solution to a common problem. All she needed was an Industrial Design partner to bring her Concept to life, from Concept Development through to Manufacturing support.
The goal Louise came to us with in 2021 was to provide an innovative, stylish self-draining planter pot that made it easier & safer to water your plants, helping them to thrive & bringing life to your home. The PerkyPod of today is exactly that, but more. PerkyPod simplifies watering, eliminating all the guesswork & heavy lifting – no mess, no stress, no lifting.
How it works:
1. Water your plant thoroughly with up to 1-1.5L of water
- Thermo-air barrier moderates soil temperature for happy roots
- Internal root barrier and geofilter keep roots & soil in the pot, while ensuring water thoroughly drains
- Excess water is funneled into a water catchment drawer
- Water catchment drawer holds nearly 900mL – remove and tip out (recycle!) anytime that’s convenient or keep it there for the next watering session
- Optional, discrete castor wheels allow for easy manoeuvring
Challenges & Opportunities
- Our design approach from the get-go was to create a high-value, aesthetically pleasing, functional & long-lasting product using circular economy materials & modern manufacturing processes. Essentially, our aim was to turn waste into a beautiful product that consumers would fall in love with, keep for a long time & recycle at the end of its life
- During the design process we were able to integrate moulded-in features, allowing for wheels & an omni-directional caster to be fitted
- The ability to mix & match the inner and outer components would allow our client to create new product ranges
- Stackable, promoting sustainable practices regarding maximising pallet density during shipping
- The lid of the water drawer has been designed to minimise insect infestation & the chance of spills while being moved. Additionally, when tipped upside down, the drawer features an easy pour spout that has a gentle slope, encouraging the elimination of every drop of water
- Subtle branding for the design-conscious owner
The Results

- Removable water catchment drawer captures excess water, negating the need to underwater to avoid messes
- Drenching plants encourages deep roots, so they thriv.

- can be tipped out and recycled onto another plant (or retained in the water catchment drawer for next time)
