The Brief

Maitland City Council were seeking a concept to design & install a temporary tropical streetscape which would be hidden behind a decorative entrance that unveils an ‘Urban Jungle’. With semi mature trees, vertical gardens, overhead shade, ambient lighting & forest soundscape to create an immersive an inviting green space for planned activities, office workers & the community to take a pause.

Challenges & Opportunities

  • Modularity was required for easy of installation. Would be factory built at Design Anthology before being delivered & installed in Maitland
  • Designed to accommodate wheelchair accessibility
  • Required integrated lighting, watering system & sound
  • Hard wearing, slip rated & durable surfaces to be integrated
  • Required durable construction materials & methods that could be recycled/repurposed Design had to accommodate multiple shaded breakout spaces & seating for up to 50 ppl
  • Had to be designed to work around existing door & window opening within the laneway

The Results

  • Styling in keeping with Maitland’s geometric branding
  • Successful installed in Moore St, Maitland ahead of the launch date
  • MCC received their highest social media engagement result on record
  • Designed with accessibility & inclusion in mind, allowing it to be a space everyone can enjoy without impacting neighbouring buildings
  • Multiple shaded breakout spaces & seating for up to 50 ppl allow the space to be used as a relaxing lunch spot, a place for friends to meet, event space & as a location to take a pause
